What's a Search Engine?
Web sites like AltaVista, InfoSeek, Excite, Yahoo, etc...these are search engines. You can go to these search engines to find web sites and pages of a particular topic that is of interest to you.

Different Types of Search Engines
The word 'search engine' is often used to describe both search engines and directories. Here are the differences.

Search Engines such as AltaVista, create a database of web sites by 'crawling' the web. This database is then searchable by you, the end user. As web pages are changed, the search engine will eventually detect it, and the listing will be changed automatically. Human involvement in this process is very little. Web sites are accepted based on a given set of variables, originally programmed by the owners and operators of the search engine.

Directories like Yahoo relies on human involvement for its existence. In order to get a site listed in the Yahoo directories, one must submit a short description of the site. The staff at Yahoo will then review the site that you have submitted, and determine if it would be a valuable addition to Yahoo, based on their own predetermined list of criteria. Changing a page on your site in this case would not effect it's listing at Yahoo.

Hybrid Search Engines. Some search engines have both a directory based system, and a search engine based system all in one place. When you perform a search in Yahoo, for instance, you are first directed to all the sites listed in the Yahoo directories that match your search. If there are no sites in the Yahoo directories that match your search, Yahoo gives you the option of clicking into all the matches in it's associated search engine, Google. It is much easier to get into Yahoo's Google search engine. And that is why there are so many more web sites in Google.
